Stills´ design has impact for landmark Cardiff Library

Stills has been appointed to design the signage and internal reading pods within the new Cardiff Library. As well as commissioning five huge abstract oil paintings, Stills’ work to create a vibrant, dynamic atmosphere also includes the development of impactful three-dimensional signage that appears not only in English and Welsh but also in Braille.

The blown-up graphic images and arresting six-foot high orange signage totems play a key role in setting the tone of the building as well as providing an impactful and consistent design focus within the interior.

“Signage has more than a way finding part to play within any building. In its dual role it has to be both practical and aesthetic. The use of scale, colour and the right typographical treatment within its design can make a space realize its full potential. The signage can set the tone, dictate behaviour and create expectation” said David Lea, Creative Director at Stills.

“The new library is an excellent building with wonderful spaces; we have produced a design that communicates clearly, is friendly and dynamic, working with the space and magnifying the dynamics of the architecture.”
