St Davids

Stills help St David’s 2 build on their success

'St David's 2' is an exciting new development coming to the Capital City of Wales. The development once open in 2009 will enhance the existing shopping and city living in Cardiff.

As one of the most important city developments in the UK today and currently the largest private financial investment in Wales, the scheme builds on present assets including the existing St David's Shopping Centre and much of the Hayes. The scheme is set to transform the Southern end of the City and give a currently underused area a new lease of life by creating attractive and safe public spaces for people to enjoy, alongside a unique and exciting contemporary retail space which caters to the needs of the 21st century shopper.

Stills are delighted to have been chosen by St David’s 2 to provide essential marketing support to help communicate the details and importance of the project and what it means to Cardiff to the local and wider community. Stills Managing Director Chris Carpenter said “St David’s 2 dominates the Cardiff skyline, there is no bigger development of this kind in Wales and we are very proud to be associated with it. The work has been challenging, especially producing and erecting the hundreds of meters of graphics that make up the hoarding boards”.

Stills have been responsible for developing the St David’s unique look and its application to hoarding boards, display areas and multi–media presentations. Chris goes on to say “the project is picking up pace and there is so much more to do. Consumers are thirsty for up to date information and it’s partly our job to support the St David’s team in delivering that”.

A St David’s spokesperson commented “the development is central to the future of Cardiff for a number of reasons. Not only will it bring significant investment to the area, alongside John Lewis, which is opening its first store in Wales through 'St David's 2', we hope to secure a number of retailers to the city for the first time. Alongside other major developments in the Welsh capital, 'St David's 2' brings an outstanding opportunity to make a contribution to the emergence of Cardiff as a major European destination. Stills have been important in supporting us in communicating the detail of the project to residents of Cardiff and Wales”.

Stills creates new look for Confused.com

One of the fastest–growing online companies in the UK has called in Cardiff–based design specialists Stills to give them a new look.

Confused.com is now the biggest price comparison site for car insurance in the country and has also captured 17 per cent of the home insurance market and is set to grow even more.

Founded less than 6 years ago, the rapid expansion of business has prompted the need for the Confused.com website to undergo a design make–over to maintain its competitive edge, cater for the new services including insurance, finance, motoring and utilities products, and to ensure that the customer user experience is the very best it can be.

Stills, whose 12-strong design team operate from a converted church in Cardiff, beat a number of other agencies to win the redesign contract.
“Despite Confused.com still being in its infancy it has already made a massive impact in the price comparison insurance market and is one of the biggest web success stories in Britain, and it is continuing to grow at an astonishing pace” said Stills’ Marketing Director James Horsham.

“Being very aware that Confused.com was already performing extremely well we wanted to ensure that whatever we did retained all that was recognisable and memorable about the existing site, so we evolved and enhanced where we believed we could add most value. The new site now looks much fresher and is better laid out than the old site, which has already improved the customer experience.”

Along with the re-design, Stills worked with partner company Fusion to build a prototype of the new Confused.com site so that it could be trialed before being launched.

Enact

Stills turns up the heat for Enact

Established in 1996, Enact has been managing award winning home energy conservation grant programmes for over 10 years. The HEAT Project, the brand used by Enact to market the energy saving measures, is one of Britain’s longest established and most successful local authority endorsed energy saving Projects.

Enact recently commissioned Cardiff based brand communications agency Stills to review and develop both brands. This is in a considered drive to communicate Enact’s green carbon saving credentials.

Stills Marketing Director, James Horsham said “We were delighted to have been chosen by Enact to develop their brands as energy efficiency is currently a very topical and important area. What Enect can do is practically help people reduce their carbon footprints, what Stills has done is to ensure that the consumer understands this by developing the Enact brand so that it communicates the key brand messages more efficiently and effectively”.

Stills have developed a new visual identity including logos, overall look and feel, literature, direct marketing, advertising, websites etc. Paul Johnson, Enact Operations Director commented, “Stills have added real value to our brands through design. Their processes, creativity and its application have made a huge difference to our business and how we are perceived. We are now engaging far better with our consumers”.

“The roll–out of the new brand is now mostly complete. However, our expansion plans are in their infancy and there is much work to be done. We look forward to our continuing relationship with Stills and the support they can provide for many years to come”.

Cardiff–based brand communications agency Stills has appointed Anna Lewis as Business Development Manager to continue to build Stills’ presence in the UK.

Anna comes with a wealth of sales and marketing experience. She will add considerable value to the existing Stills offering of branding, design and internet development.

She is the fifth new appointment at Stills in the last three months as business at the agency continues to boom, taking the team to 14 people. Recent clients to have come onboard including Calon Wen, Confused.com, Royal Mint, XFM and bedroom and kitchen manufacturer Sigma 3.

Stills managing director Chris Carpenter said: “Anna’s arrival marks a really exciting time for all of Stills. Branding and design work is booming in Wales but we are continuing to pick up contracts across the whole of the UK – often as a result of personal recommendation.”

Sigma 3

Sigma 3 gets a make–over from Stills

South Wales–based Kitchen and bedroom manufacturer Sigma 3 has undergone a thorough make-over with Cardiff-based brand communications agency Stills.

The name remains the same – Sigma 3 – but the brand is being made more attractive to consumers.

“It started late 2006 when we conducted demographic and brand insight research to define consumer profiles and better understand how consumers engaged with the brand,” said Stills marketing director James Horsham.

“We conducted more than 1,000 telephone interviews to build clear profiles of Sigma 3 consumers. This included collecting information about their age, gender, income, household values etc. We also ran consumer and staff focus groups in England and Wales to gain more insight into how they engaged with the brand.

“From all of this we created a brand blueprint for Sigma 3 that defined brand values, personality and communications. We used this information as the brief to develop the brand visual identity including logos, brand structure, colour ways, imagery, spans, language, print design, signage etc.

“It’s now being implemented throughout the business and even in its early days is having a positive impact with Sigma 3 consumers.”

And Sigma 3’s marketing manager Paula Morris was equally thrilled with make-over. “After more than 30 years in business, we felt it was high time our brand was freshened up. Sigma 3 has a great reputation and a loyal customer base, so it was important not to throw away the good with the bad in assessing and evolving our visual identity.

“Stills advised us to conduct some research before we did anything else, which really provided the backbone of the whole re-branding exercise and helped us to define our brand values. Then Stills presented us with a creative solution that communicates exactly who we are and what we stand for.

“Proving their ability to apply their creativity in practical situations, Stills have cleverly developed and adapted our new visual identity to fit our 12 very different showrooms, our fleet of delivery vehicles, advertising, stationery, website… the list goes on. We now have a fresh, contemporary corporate identity which we are confident will prove pivotal in our ambitious plans for expansion.”

The roll-out of the new brand is almost complete and touches every corner of the business, from its factory in Llantrisant, South Wales, to the livery of all the delivery vehicles and the five showrooms in Cardiff, Swansea, Newport and Warton in Lancashire.

And a similar process is also being applied to Sigma 3’s County Kitchens and Bedrooms – the brand which the company works under in England where it has seven showrooms.

New Starts

New Starts
Welsh design agency Stills expanding

The brand communications agency Stills is recruiting four new employees to cope with a boom in design contracts they’ve won.

New designer Vicki Ashurst, production manager Kathryn Marsh and production assistant Ceri Mears have just started with the Cardiff–based agency. In addition, a fourth vacancy exists for a new business manager.

The company is based in a converted chapel a few minutes walk from Cardiff city centre. “It’s a stimulating and creative environment and the nature of the work we do is very diverse – from brand development to websites and films,”said Marketing Director James Horsham.

The agency has recently won contracts all over the UK, including in the West Country with energy efficiency consultants Enact, in London for oil and gas consultants Energy and Power and oil exploration company Fox Oil, in Cheltenham with Lyndon Design and Liverpool law firm Silverbeck Ryner.

Nearer to home in Wales, they’ve also started contracts with Cambrian Organics, Confused.com – a branch of Admiral Insurance, Cardiff Council and bedroom and kitchen manufacturer Sigma 3 of Llantrisant.

“There has been a boom in design work in Wales over the last five years or so and as one of the longest established agencies we’ve been well placed to benefit from it,” said James Horsham.

“But a lot of our work comes through word of mouth. Many of the companies we deal with have national profiles and when they recommend us to other companies it takes us all over the country. Geography doesn’t seem to be such a factor in the design business any more.”

Eco Packs

Cardiff firm Stills behind eco–friendly milk revolution

An revolutionary new way of buying milk that will help the environment is being piloted in the UK with the help of Cardiff–based design company Stills.

Forget polybottles and cartons – it’s “eco paks” that shoppers will soon be taking their milk home in.

The strong film pouches containing Welsh Calon Wen organic milk went on sale in Waitrose supermarkets last month alongside reusable milk jugs that fit into any fridge door. They hold one eco pak at a time which are then easily replaced when needed.

The labelling for the new eco paks and the livery of the dispensing boxes they stand in on shelves and the boxes of jugs alongside them in the Waitrose supermarket aisles were all designed by Stills of Cardiff.

The company’s creative director, David Lea, said: “Our aim was to create a brand that linked the organic milk product directly with the farm with values of care for environment, natural purity and healthy country living.

“And we wanted shoppers to be left in no doubt that Calon Wen is a cared for product that comes from local organic farms in the Welsh countryside, from West Wales to Snowdonia.”

Using 75% less plastic packaging than a polybottle of the same volume, the eco paks and jugs will be particularly attractive to the growing numbers of environmentally-conscious shoppers. If the eco pak-milk jug system was so successful as to replace polybottles entirely, nearly 100,000 tonnes of plastic would be saved every year in the UK.

The jug, along with eco packs of skimmed, semi-skimmed and whole milk will be available in three Waitrose branches in Wales, a further 17 in London and one Bath. If successful, it could be rolled out throughout the supermarket chain.
